Keep your options open

A move abroad.
Not a closed door.

Think about a possible UK return before you leave. The records you keep now can help you make a later decision with more options.

Your UK registration

Ask your own regulator what maintaining, changing or restoring your status would involve. Check the effects on fees, professional development and any continuing requirements before making a change.

Training and progression

If you are in a UK programme, speak to the relevant training body about time abroad, approval and return arrangements. Get individual decisions in writing. Overseas service experience does not automatically count towards UK training.

Keep useful evidence

Maintain a record of posts, dates, working hours, supervision, assessments, learning and scope. Keep certificates and references securely, without retaining patient-identifiable information.

Financial ties

Review pensions, student-loan reporting, tax residence and ongoing UK commitments with the appropriate official source or qualified adviser. A move can affect more than the salary you receive.

Review your decision

Set your own points for reviewing the move. Consider professional progress, family needs, finances and wellbeing. Returning, moving again or staying longer can each be a reasonable outcome.

A planning guide
Use this to organise questions. Verify your own registration, immigration, tax and entitlement position with the responsible organisation or a suitably qualified adviser.
