Veterinarians abroad

New horizons for the work you care about. Explore 20 destinations, with detailed starting points for Australia and New Zealand and profession-specific recognition checks elsewhere.

Ask these questions first

  • Is your primary veterinary qualification recognised?
  • Which local board registers practitioners in your intended location?
  • How are emergency cover, travel, case mix and support arranged?
Keep the whole role in view
AVBC directs applicants to the veterinary board in the jurisdiction where they want to work. Those boards use its recognised-qualifications list; further assessment can be required.

Official starting points

Australia

Check the AVBC recognised-qualification list against your veterinary school, exact award and graduation date, then apply to the veterinary board where you intend to practise. An unlisted qualification may require further examination. Human-health registration pathways do not apply.

New Zealand

Check the AVBC recognised veterinary-qualification list and apply to New Zealand’s veterinary registration authority. Recognition of an award does not itself complete registration or establish work rights; the human-health councils’ routes do not apply.

Prepare for the conversation

Bring a clear record of your qualifications, countries of training and recent practice. Ask the regulator what route applies, and ask the employer what the job actually involves.

Before accepting an offer, compare supervision, working hours, professional costs, location and support. A route to registration does not, by itself, confirm a suitable vacancy or permission to work.
