Public-institution routes may avoid the medical licensing examination, subject to the precise registration category, recognised qualifications and an eligible job.

Recognition / streamlined routes

Employer-linked routes without the licensing examination

Limited registration requires an eligible employment type, an acceptable overseas qualification, relevant clinical experience and overseas registration; applicants do not take the Licensing Examination for that route. Special registration is a different pathway. For a non-permanent resident entering through the recognised-degree route, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine specialist-equivalence and continuing-education requirements also apply. A listed UK degree does not by itself grant unrestricted practice, and a junior doctor should not assume eligibility for the specialist route.

Other professions

Nursing, midwifery, dentistry, pharmacy and other scopes have separate registration systems. Ask the employer about the clinical language requirements of the actual post. Veterinary practice is separately regulated and is not covered by Medical Council registration.

Qualification recognition ≠ permission to practise
Automatic or direct recognition describes a particular qualification procedure. Registration, language, scope, supervision, employment and immigration requirements can still apply. A UK licence or job title alone does not settle the route.

Four checks before you commit

  1. Match your exact qualification, award date and professional register to the local route.
  2. Confirm language, supervision, specialty recognition and any assessment requirements.
  3. Verify the role, employer, training status and written offer.
  4. Check work rights, housing and the household budget separately.
Look beyond the headline
Recognition of a qualification is not a licence to start work. Registration, scope, employment, language and work rights need separate confirmation.

Start with your profession

Each card separates a mapped official source from an authority lookup. A medical-registration route must not be applied to another profession.
