in Ireland.

An English-speaking destination with established routes, but UK medical qualifications no longer receive EU automatic recognition. Some pre-2021 UK nursing and midwifery qualifications retain a recognition route based on EU conformity.

Qualification-date conditions

Qualification-specific recognition

UK-qualified doctors apply through the Medical Council's non-EU process. UK Foundation Year 1 with a Certificate of Experience may support an exemption from PRES; the Council decides. General-registration applicants need primary-source verification. GP and consultant applicants must check specialist registration separately; a UK job title is insufficient.

Other professions

NMBI says UK or EU nationals with UK general-nursing or midwifery qualifications obtained before 1 January 2021 can submit NMC confirmation of qualification dates and EU conformity, potentially avoiding a full education assessment. Later UK qualifications require full education assessment and may need compensation measures. This does not establish routes for dentistry, pharmacy, paramedicine or veterinary medicine.

Qualification recognition ≠ permission to practise
Automatic or direct recognition describes a particular qualification procedure. Registration, language, scope, supervision, employment and immigration requirements can still apply. A UK licence or job title alone does not settle the route.

Four checks before you commit

  1. Match your exact qualification, award date and professional register to the local route.
  2. Confirm language, supervision, specialty recognition and any assessment requirements.
  3. Verify the role, employer, training status and written offer.
  4. Check work rights, housing and the household budget separately.
Look beyond the headline
Qualification recognition and permission to work are separate. Check language, good standing and the exact register division. Do not describe Ireland as universally automatic for UK-trained clinicians.

Start with your profession

Each card separates a mapped official source from an authority lookup. A medical-registration route must not be applied to another profession.
